What is onboarding

Onboarding refers to the process of welcoming a new employee to an organization. This often includes administrative tasks such as filling out paperwork, figuring out the necessary equipment and access to systems, and giving a general introduction to the organization. The purpose of onboarding is to ensure that the new employee feels welcome and is quickly integrated into the organization

What is working-in

Induction, on the other hand, refers to the process by which a new employee is trained to perform his or her duties effectively. This often includes explaining the organization’s specific processes and procedures, training the new employee in the required skills, and providing feedback and support to ensure that the new employee can be successful in his or her role

Onboarding is strategy, working-in is practice

In short, onboarding is more focused on general introduction to the organization and creating a sense of belonging, while onboarding is focused on training the new employee in the specific duties and responsibilities associated with the position. However, both processes are important for successfully integrating a new employee into an organization

Some parties prefer working-in

A few times we hear at ENBOQ, that the use of the English term onboarding is impoverishment of the Dutch language. On the contrary, others say that it shows that we know the matter well, because we recognize a clear distinction between onboarding and onboarding

It is important to note that the specific meanings of the terms onboarding and onboarding can vary depending on the context and the organization using them

Onboarding and introduction

Onboarding goes beyond just the induction period of a new employee. Although the introduction period is an important part of onboarding, the process of onboarding generally encompasses all activities aimed at effectively integrating a new employee into an organization so that he or she can quickly and effectively contribute to the organization

Onboarding or employing

Whatever we call it, we are talking about the following steps in welcoming the new employee:

    • Clear expectations regarding the new employee’s job and performance.

    • Training the new employee in the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

    • Introducing the new employee to key colleagues and stakeholders within the organization.

    • Creating a sense of commitment to the organization and its mission, including explaining the company’s culture, values and vision.

    • Supporting the new employee in developing key skills and competencies needed to function effectively within the organization.

The goal is to effectively integrate new employees into the organization and support them in successfully carrying out their duties and responsibilities
